64 Squares is a chess app designed to be played by voice, including by people who are blind, have low vision or have limited movement. This policy explains what information the app handles, why, and who processes it. It is written to be read plainly, including by screen readers.
When voice control is on, the app listens through your microphone. You can pause or switch off listening at any time with the microphone controls on screen.
| What | Why | Who processes it |
|---|---|---|
| Voice audio and its transcript | Understanding spoken moves, questions and commands | Your phone's speech service (e.g. Google); AssemblyAI |
| The text of requests to AI features, and the moves of the game or puzzle involved | Game reviews, explanations, hints and the voice assistant | AssemblyAI (including its LLM Gateway) and, as a backup, OpenAI — through our own server |
| A random identifier created by the app | Keeping your purchases, daily limits and online games attached to your device, without an account | 64 Squares (our server on Cloudflare); RevenueCat |
| Purchase history | Unlocking Pro and gifted memberships | Google Play; RevenueCat |
| Advertising identifier, basic device information and approximate location derived from your IP address | Showing a reward ad. The ad service is only started when you choose to watch an ad. | Google AdMob; RevenueCat (ad measurement) |
| A notification identifier, basic device information (such as phone model, Android version and language), app usage such as notifications opened, and simple facts such as your play streak | Reminders, in-app messages and "your move" notifications. Notifications only reach you if you allow them. | OneSignal |
| App version and a random installation identifier | Delivering app updates | Expo (EAS Update) |
| Your moves and a generated nickname (such as "Bold Rook 42") | Playing online against other people | 64 Squares (our server on Cloudflare) |
| The content of an AI response you report, and the game it concerns | Investigating reports of inappropriate or incorrect AI output | 64 Squares; kept for up to 180 days |
Your settings, finished games and their reviews, puzzle progress and streak are stored on your device. Uninstalling the app removes them.
All information sent between the app and these services is encrypted in transit (HTTPS/WSS).
64 Squares is not directed at children under 13 and is intended for users aged 13 and over.
64 Squares uses the Stockfish chess engine, which is free software licensed under the GNU General Public License v3. Its licence and source are available at echo-chess.pages.dev/engine/sf19/Copying.txt and github.com/official-stockfish/Stockfish.
We will update this page when the app's use of information changes, and the date at the top will change with it.
